Top 10 Things You Should Never Use Your Teeth For

Why Do Some Teeth Have More Grooves and Ridges Than Others?
2 October 2026
It’s one of the biggest misconceptions about dental health: if nothing hurts, everything must be fine.
Unfortunately, teeth and gums don’t always work that way.
Some dental problems can develop quietly for months or even years before they cause obvious discomfort. By the time pain finally appears, what began as a relatively small issue may have become much more significant.
That’s why pain shouldn’t be the only way you judge whether your mouth is healthy.
Tooth Decay Doesn’t Always Hurt
A small area of tooth decay can develop without producing any noticeable symptoms.
The outer layer of a tooth, enamel, doesn’t contain nerves. Early decay affecting this area therefore may not hurt at all.
As decay progresses deeper into the tooth towards the dentine and eventually the pulp, symptoms may become more likely.
You might notice sensitivity to cold or sweet foods, discomfort when biting or eventually toothache.
But there’s no guarantee you’ll receive an early warning.
Gum Disease Can Be Surprisingly Quiet
Gum disease is another condition that may progress without significant pain.
In its earlier stages, you may notice bleeding during brushing or flossing, redness or slightly swollen gums.
Because these changes aren’t necessarily uncomfortable, they’re easy to ignore.
As gum disease progresses, it can affect the tissues and bone that support the teeth.
Some people don’t realise anything significant is happening until they notice gum recession, changes in tooth position or mobility.
Regular bleeding from your gums isn’t something to simply accept as normal.
Cracks Aren’t Always Obvious
A cracked tooth sounds like something you’d immediately notice.
Not necessarily.
Some cracks are extremely small and can be difficult to see, even when you’re looking directly at the tooth.
A crack may initially produce no symptoms at all.
Others cause occasional sensitivity or a brief sensation when chewing something in a particular way.
Because the discomfort can disappear immediately, it can be tempting to forget about it.
Problems Around Existing Fillings Can Develop Gradually
Fillings and other dental restorations do a lot of work.
Every day they’re exposed to biting forces, temperature changes, food, drinks and bacteria.
Over time, restorations can wear or develop changes around their edges.
You may not necessarily feel these changes.
This is one reason existing dental work is checked even when you’re not experiencing any problems.
Wisdom Teeth Can Cause Problems Quietly
Partially erupted wisdom teeth can create areas that are difficult to clean.
Food and plaque may collect around the tooth and gum without causing immediate discomfort.
For some people, the first obvious sign of trouble is when the surrounding gum suddenly becomes sore or swollen.
Monitoring these areas allows us to see what’s happening before symptoms necessarily develop.
Even a Damaged Tooth May Stop Hurting
This one can be particularly misleading.
Sometimes a tooth that has been painful suddenly stops hurting.
Naturally, it’s easy to assume the problem has resolved itself.
But a reduction in pain doesn’t always mean the tooth has recovered. If the nerve inside a severely damaged or infected tooth loses vitality, the original pain may decrease even though the underlying problem remains.
A toothache that mysteriously disappears is therefore still worth mentioning to us.
Why Doesn’t Your Body Warn You Earlier?
Pain is an incredibly useful warning system, but it isn’t a perfect dental diagnostic tool.
Different tissues respond differently to damage, and some areas of the teeth and gums can undergo considerable changes before nerves become involved.
People also experience pain very differently.
Something that causes significant discomfort for one person may produce almost no symptoms for another.
This Is Why Regular Checks Matter
Regular dental examinations aren’t simply about finding the source of an existing toothache.
They give us an opportunity to look for changes you may not be able to see or feel yourself.
We can examine your gums, existing restorations, tooth surfaces and other areas of your mouth for early signs that something has changed.
Finding a problem doesn’t automatically mean extensive treatment either. In many situations, identifying something earlier gives us more options for managing it.
So don’t wait for your teeth to hurt before paying attention to them.
If it’s been a while since we’ve seen you, come and visit us. Even when everything feels perfectly fine, checking what’s happening beneath the surface can help keep it that way.
